Freestyle #1

In this video I am trying to convey the mood and attitude of the Jazz Age in the 1920s in America.

I am very fond of the charming and seductiveness yet dangerous aspect of the age and I am trying to convey those feeling through my guitar playing. However, we could all agree that I need a lot of improvements. I tried playing chords that are right beside each other in order to create that unsettling mood. I tried to make this sound as Jazz as possible, as thick as possible.

I am going to continue and learn this way of playing the guitar and I want to develop and grow more as a guitarist.

Freestyle #2

In this video I am doing a freestyle on 11th chords. I did not use the bass notes so it sounded more like a major chord.

What I was trying to do in this video is imitating guitar samples in daft punk / breakbot songs, funk music. I am very much interested to learn the skill and technique as it is unique and different from any other guitar techniques. They are complicated and intricate yet are able to give a solid backing to the melody.

I am going to learn how to play funk style guitar.

Violin Solo Section + Outro - Horizon Is Blue

In this video I am practicing my accompaniment for the violin solo and the outro of my composition Horizon is Blue.

I wanted to have a change of tempo like all my other songs and I will be able to do that with the transition to the solo section, then another change of tempo again this time very quiet and intimate sounding. Much like 4 or 5 in the morning after a great night and you just want to go home, sleep in and relax. So that is the idea, with the solo sort of being the climax of the night.

I will keep on practicing this along with my mates so that we could perfect playing this song.

Intro - Horizon Is Blue

In this video I am playing the introduction to my composition Horizon is Blue.

I started out soft as I intend to gather the audience's attention and give it a gradual increase in intensity as well. After the first cycle I will play a more energetic tune to get the mood up a bit, then the next cycle, the violin goes in and plays the harmonious full notes to accompany my guitar. After that and only then will the flute go in, completing the gradual process from nothing to something.

As per usual, I will keep on practicing the song, myself and with my mates so that we would be able to play this song perfectly on performance day.

The Smiths - This Charming Man

In this video I am playing 'this charming man,' a song by a British band called the Smiths. Again, it is by no means a good cover but I just thought of uploading it for variety's sake. So here it is. I enjoyed the jingle sound of it all and the fact that throughout the sing these melodies are the ones being played instead of the usual strumming, which I find really fascinating and brilliant.

Just like what I said in the previous upload, I am going to keep working on my composition by practicing it not only by myself but also with friends since the composition is meant to be played by three people.

The Smiths - Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others

In this video I am covering bits of The Smith's song, 'some girls are bigger then others.' It is by no means a good cover, so do not go all berserk on me just yet. I just thought that instead of posting another video of myself practicing my composition like what I have been doing for the past two weeks or so, I'd upload something different.

So here is my half-cover of the song. It is not any good but the tunes are pretty nice. I think I mentioned about Johnny Marr in previous videos (?) well he made composed the song and the other song that I am about to upload, 'this charming man'

All the while I will keep on practicing my composition no doubt, and I will also rehearse it with my friends because the composition is meant to be played by three instruments.

Horizon Is Blue Rehearsal

In this video I am playing the melody with the new chord accompaniment that is strummed. I am playing the melodies much clearer and in tempo this time, much better compared to last time. However, there are still lots of room for improvement like in the last part of the song where I made a mistake and tried to cover it up a bit with improvisation.

I still need to practice my melody more and make it second nature. So until next time, I will continue practicing my song.

Composition Chords - Strummed

In this video I am strumming the chords to my composition Horizon Is Blue instead of finger picking the chords. I find this way of playing the chords much better and sophisticated. It give a deeper volume and depth to the sound and it seems very thick and rich. I will use this instead of the finger picking style.

I am going to practice the strumming again, there are some areas which could be improved like the tempo and clarity of the strumming for example.

Jazz Composition Rehearsal without Bass (Violin)

In this video I am playing the melody to the chords of my composition. I recorded the chords in garage band earlier and played it back. WIth the chords as the background sound and the video recording I played the melody and so you can hear the chords and how the melody sounds with it.

I am pretty satisfied with the outcome although my timing on certain parts of the song could improve. It sounds bad on the musical sheet i made partly because i am no expert in plotting the right beats and I just play by ear. Well this is how it SHOULD sound like and well yeah... i think it is decent.

Next time I am just going to keep on practicing the song and make it second nature to me.

Jazz Ambient Composition Chords

In this video I am practicing the chords of my ambient jazz composition. The chords used were C11, Db 11, Eb 11, G 11, B 11 and C# 11. The chords were finger picked and it really gives out an interesting relaxing jazz vibe out. It resonates calmness, class and serenity. It's like you are somewhere high and prestigious.

Next time I should better my skills at playing the chords and avoid having the screeching sound when I change chords.

Chord 11 Progressions - Continued

In this video I am continuing the chords of the previous video. I am exploring the possible chords that will sound good. This will allow myself to make more dynamic and diverse melodies. I still strum the chords as I thought it was the best way to go.

Next time I will try to use picking instead and see what atmosphere it creates instead.

11th Chord Progressions

In this video 11th chord progressions for relaxation song is played. I tuned the guitar differently so that I am able to use my thumb to play because it is easier that way. I have made a few melodies and this is the accompaniment I used for it. It is nice and classy and gives a sense of ambience and serene feeling.

Now I am going to try and practice without the alternative tuning and to strum it clearer and cleaner.

C9 Based Tune w/ Pick

Similar to the previous video I am playing roughly the same tune with the same chords. This time however I used the pick.

With the use of the pick the chords sounds strong yet conservative; not too showy. Very Marr-esque. This could be used when in a song we want to change emphasis and tempo altogether escaping to a whole new dimension of space and time. Again, I love it, very interesting indeed.

I am going to explore what strumming patterns will suit the chords more and to see whether a certain kind can accentuate certain emotions.

Tune Around C9 w/ Fingers

I have found C9 chords very interesting lately. Theory-wise and applying it in notation i'm not as competent but when playing the chords, boy does it feel good. It resonates a certain feel of smooth class with an edge.

This is a tune I came up with a few days back when I was told what a C9 and C11 looks like and more specifically how to play it in the guitar. I noodled around and came up with this. It is a combination of both chords but mostly about 9th chords. I finger picked this one. It gives an even smoother sound and feel to it, very good for jazz songs and ambient music. Even some sound like the chords Johnny Marr would use. Very intriguing indeed.

I will continue to explore the chords in the future.

Major 11th Chords

In this video I am strumming major 11th chords. The chords sounds very interesting and it gives a totally different vibe than the any other chords.

The 11th Major Chord gives a the sharpness of the 7th chord and the serenity and calmness of the 9th. It is attacking but doing so subtly, it is great for relaxing tunes for where the song needs an extra kick. Extra kick like in the bridge or chorus where the song could change moods.

I am going to further explore the chords to see if there are any other variations that give a whole new different vibe.

Major 9th Chords

In this video I am messing around with different major 9th chords. I strummed the chords with variations and jumps to create an interesting tune.

The major 9th chords give a real serene and clear vibe to the atmosphere. The chord should be very useful when making ambient relaxing music. Compared to the joyous and generic major chord and the sharp 7th chord, the Major 9th is way more clear and relaxing.

I am going to further explore 9th chords and started learning the minor 9th and original 9th chords with the 7th note lowered half a step.

Fly Me To The Moon #2

In this video I did an alternate strumming on the same jazz song, "fly me to the moon."

Instead of just doing pure strumming, I gave a little muted sound to the chords in order to give it a more accompaniment vibe. I am most probably going to use this method of strumming when I am playing with my friends and when we are performing later on.

I still need to keep on practicing these chords and  to make it second nature to me. I will also look to have some more variations and different patterns as to not make the chords sound monotone and boring.

Fly Me To The Moon Chords #1

In this video I am practicing the chords to the jazz song, 'fly me to the moon'.

My strumming were okay, not so clean but not so bad either. I could have played it much better by making a louder clearer sound. I could have also pressed my left forefinger harder onto the fretboard so that the chords will be clearer.

I am going to keep on practice the chords to the song and memorise more of the chords. By next time I should be able to play the chords to the whole song already.

Django Reinhardt Jazz Lick

Django Reinhardt is an amazing musician and after doing the Jazz presentations and finding out about him, I grew to really like his works. This is me playing one of his jazz licks.

The lick is very simple however, it requires great amount of practice to be able to play it smoothly and clearly as Django. I tried doing the lick a couple of times in the video and I have been doing it probably about 10 times before i recorded the video. The first few tries I played it slowly while gradually increasing the speed.

I thought I did okay and the beauty of the jazz lick was recognisable. But of course, I still need to train more. With the chromatic scale I am practicing in the previous video, I could really improve my skills and be able to play the jazz lick well.

Chromatic Scale

I am currently practicing the chromatic scale.

The chromatic scale is basically every single note possible and it sounds very unique and weird however nice. This is one of my ways of practicing my picking, I saw one of my friends do this and i thought it was a great idea to exercise picking, so I tried and trained so myself.

I am quite good when playing the notes forward but when going back, I find myself making careless mistakes and got the timing all wrong. To improve my skill I will practice it again.

Improvisation in C

In this video I am improvising with the blues scale in C.

I am pretty happy with this improvisation, there are lots of emotion and up and downs. It is not flat and it is not boring. I also loved the sound of the blues scale in C, i believe it makes each note seem more alive and meaningful.

I will continue practice improvisations on other scales and improve my guitar playing further.

12 Bar Blues Composition Practice

In this video I am practicing my 12 Bar Blues composition. I did an improvisation of my noted improvisation and I thought it went pretty well. My original noted improvisation seems a bit flat and in this video i sort of spiced it up a bit by making some parts more complicated which will be extremely tough to note down. Nonetheless I will continue practicing the song and make myself second nature to it.

12 Bar Blues Improvisation #3

In this video I am yet again practicing my 12 Bar Blue Improvisation. This time, I played the improvisation in a more flowing and expressive manner. I tried not to rush it but increase the emotions attributed each note instead. I think this is pretty good. I will still continue practicing it though.

12 Bar Blues Improvisation Practice #2

In this video I am practicing the improvisation that I have written down on paper and made in Finale. My playing was decent, I was much better to the mid-section than I was last time however, my ending was awful and messy. I still need to work on them further.

12 Bar Blues Improvisation Practice #1

In this video I am playing my melody in the 12 Bar Blues Improvisation piece I had to do. The middle section was not played well and could have been smoother. But saying that, the ending was decent and the whole video was decent. I'll continue to work on my melody.

Blues Scale in A + Licks using the Scale

In this video I am practicing the Blues scale again. In the later part of the video I played some licks that were based on the same scale. The songs were "Black Dog" by Led Zeppelin and "Sunshine of My Love" by Cream. I have also picked better and played it faster while not having to reduce its clarity. I will continue to practice the scales.

Blues Scale in A

In this video I am practicing the Blues scale in A. The playing was decent, it could have been better by picking the notes cleaner and more precise. Instead of just playing the scale I could have tried to make some licks or play some licks that uses the same scale.

12 Bar Blues Chords

In this video I am playing the 12 bar blues chords.

I am using the chord progression of I IV I I - IV IV I I - V IV I V in the key of A7. I repeatedly strum the string downwards, producing a "chucking" sound. In the middle of the video my strumming changes and I also added some variations to the chords  to make it more interesting.

I will try to make another accompaniment based on another key and explore the different sounds the different key offers.

Jazz Chords Week 1 Lesson

In this video I am practicing the different Jazz Chords. I even made some original tune. The jazz chords really do give a soft and classy feel sound and it is really elegant. Playing jazz chords are interesting and I am going to experiment on it further.

Monday, February 11, 2013

11 Feb 2013

In this video I am practicing my blue improvisation. I improvised through a I IV I I - IV IV II - V IV I V chord progression on A7. This time I played much more freely and experimented with more notes that i thought worked well. With experimentation comes some mistakes of course, but in turn i developed a better ear for musical notes and a bit more control over the fretboards of my guitar.

11 Feb 2013

In this video I am improvising on the chord progression given in class. It was a I IV I I - IV IV I I - V IV I V blues chord progression on A7. I thought I played decent although I was limiting myself to only play the scale and not explore it further which I should have. Play the chords while listening to the video and it will sort of make sense.

Music Essay

Influence of Jazz Music Towards the Society
Ronaldo Yuliawan 10B

American singer, Christina Aguilera said that, “Blues, soul and jazz music has so much pain, so much beauty of raw emotion and passion.” This explains a lot considering Jazz originated from the blues. While working in the plantations in the south, the black slaves sung the blues to express their feel of injustice and lost love while at the same time - in happier moments - sung about their victory over broken hearts and adversities. Blues is music that tells the sufferings and joys of life. When blues reached New Orleans in the 1900s, jazz music was being conceived. In a mixture of church hymns, gospels, marching bands, ragtime and native African drumming the jazz was born. Jazz did not become the national music instantly - although it eventually did in the 1920s where the era was known as the Jazz Age - but it experienced a steady progress towards national and worldwide fame. What was unique about jazz was that since its inception, not only was it music for the black people - like what the blues was at first - but jazz was also embraced by the whites and eventually the Latin Americans in later years, they would combine all their cultural differences and make new forms of jazz. From its blues foundation, jazz has become a global phenomenon where everybody in the world can find common ground in. Jazz goes beyond music, jazz goes beyond racial and cultural differences, jazz embraces it and jazz has become the medium in which mankind unites as one.

Before jazz became one of the most well known genres of music, it first experienced very humble beginnings in the southern region of the United States. Afro-American slaves working in the plantations in the region were treated terribly. These slaves were treated as objects and are considered to be the inferior race therefore sub-human. In the plantations they would experience whippings and slaves would usually only last for seven years due to the amount of work they were forced to do. Slaves in churches survived only for around three years. These sufferings prompted the Afro-American slaves to cry out; from this cries and sufferings came along the earliest form of he blues. They would not only sing about the sufferings but also the joy of being free and the dream and hope of being free. Black slaves would continue to do so until the blues reached New Orleans in the 1900s where it would give birth to jazz music.

When the blues reached New Orleans, musicians combined it with numerous other music genres that were present in the city at the time. As a result jazz was given birth to from the mix of marching bands, church hymns, gospels, ragtime and the blues. Jazz music is unique because from its inception jazz embraces all the different types of music in New Orleans into one. Another interesting fact to know is that jazz - unlike the blues and rock ‘n’ roll - was soon enjoyed by both black and white people. This will prove vital in uniting both races in later years.

During the 1920s the era was famously called the ‘Jazz Age’. This was because during that period of time, jazz was the national music genre. The government has just passed the Prohibition law, which makes selling and manufacturing alcohol illegal. But people sold them and manufactured them anyway, these people were called speakeasies, they opened illegal bars that were hidden behind a seemingly innocent store by its exterior. These bars had to have a band playing and since jazz music was not accepted anywhere before the 1920s, this was where they play. Jazz music suits strongly with the lifestyle of speakeasies, a life of mystery, class and danger. Soon jazz music became popular and started to play in bigger venues. Mind you that the drinkers in the illegal bars are mostly white men. Bigger jazz bands were soon formed and these large bands were called big bands, playing a branch of jazz called the ‘swing’. Glenn Miller and Count Basie were one of the most famous band leaders emerged during this period but more importantly they have members of both races working together, not being exclusive to white or black people. But as the days were getting better for jazz, the Second World War broke loose with the assassination of Franz Ferdinand in 1939. This brought whole new deeper meanings and emotions towards jazz. From this moment on, jazz music will never be the same again.

Bands often toured base camps all over Europe to raise the morale of the soldiers. Artie Shaw, a bandleader, was at that time playing for a group of soldiers in the south pacific. He recalled how he and his bands were used to getting applauses and cheers that they had taken them for granted. They were surprised then that when they finished their performance, the soldiers did nothing. They realized something was wrong and Artie Shaw soon understood that the soldiers missed home and his band’s performance reminded them of it. In other base camps and even in the streets in the United States, bands would play to raise morale and optimism of the soldiers and the population at home about the war. By the end of the war, jazz has spread to the whole of Europe and its optimism and rebelliousness was so disturbingly apparent that Nazi Germany had to make it a crime to listen to jazz, although they eventually could not control it and ended up making their own propaganda jazz music. Although white Americans may still despise the black Americans and vice versa, they have gained a considerable amount of support from the Europeans. They learnt how to play the way the black Americans played it and they shared experiences and ideas. Europe has officially caught the jazz germ. Soon jazz would spread to the central and south Americas and with the influence of their traditional Latin music pushed jazz to new limits and branches.

Cuban immigrants that arrived in the United States incorporated their traditional Latin music with jazz musicians, creating Cuban jazz. This completes jazz’s unity and influence from the north, central, south to Latin America. Latin jazz is the culmination of all these influences, a place where we all can relate.

Jazz is not just a type of genre and jazz is not only about syncopations and swings. But jazz is about us; jazz represents how we as human beings can come together to unite as one. From the slaves in plantations singing about their sufferings, to performing in bars and wars, jazz has united all kinds of people of all races. Jazz teaches us that no matter how different we are, we are really not that different at all. Jazz shows that if we are willing to work hard, we can be united. It will not be easy but it is possible. After all, who knew that tunes sung by slaves in plantations or jazz bands in speakeasy bars could spread to Europe, trouble the Nazi and be loved by the world. Jazz tells us that it is possible because it has done it.

24 January 2013

In this video I am practicing the ionian, dorian, phrygian, lydian and mixolydian scales.

I have only been given brief instruction on what these scales really are and I have not learnt how to implement exactly. Hopefully during the next class, we will have time to learnt the scales and implement it and learn how to improvise well.

To conclude, I have half learnt the different scales within a scale. I need to make myself fluent at this to be able to improvise well.

Early Jazz

Jazz music first emerged during the 1920s in the back of fake stores that actually sell alcohols, which were at that time prohibited.

Jazz music has very humble beginnings. Like the blues, jazz music was at first unappreciated by the public. People view the music as rebellious and too 'sensual'. Jazz music was first played and gained fame at illegal venues such as brothels and bars. But it offered a new style of music and knowing how much people like changes, jazz music became bit by bit more popular. It soon gained a significant number of followers and eventually even the whites played it too. This will prove pivotal because in later years, jazz music will join both races in harmony when they are playing together playing in big bands.

To conclude, Jazz music emerged in very humble beginnings, playing in brothels and illegal bars. But it soon took a turn for the better and unite people of all races together to enjoy the music we know as jazz.

21 January 2013

We learnt further on violin playing and we were taught on how to play some parts of the A major scale in the violin too.

Playing the violin is tricky because it has no frets and we have to put our fingers by feel and hopefully later naturally by muscle memory. We did several patterns on the open strings and learnt how to play the violin well with our left hand which is supposed to press the notes. I am getting better at playing the bow because I am able to make a nice tone from the violin. I use to make a scratching sound that does not only hurt my own ears but I believe the students around me too. But I have got quite used to it and I am improving. There is still a lot to learn.

To conclude today's activity, I learnt more about the violin and how to play some parts of the A major scale. It is pretty difficult but when you get the hang of it, it is an amazing instrument to be able to play.

14 January 2013

One of the things that we are going to learn this term is how to play the violin.

We were thought the basics at first of course. How to hold it, how to stand and how to use the bow. We were also told that we are going to perform an ensemble by the end of the term which is an ambitious target because most of us have no clue on how to play the violin. I managed to do pretty well, there are a lot of things that I need to work on. Hopefully I can borrow the school's violin and practice more at home.

To conclude today's activity, I have learnt the basics of violin playing but not necessarily doing it well already. I still need to practice a lot and I am very much looking forward to it.
